English reading teaching plays a key role in senior high school English teaching.“Based on the text,English teaching should be guided by the thematic meaning,integrate the language knowledge,cultural knowledge,language skills and learning strategies,and guide students to take an independent and cooperative learning method to participate in the exploration of the theme meaning,” according to the National English Curriculum Standards for General High School(2017).The thematic context provides themes and contexts for discipline education and it requires students to understand discourse and improve reading comprehension based on the three main thematic contexts including man and self,man and society and man and nature.This paper aims to explore a new reading teaching mode based on the theme context,hoping that students’ reading enthusiasm,reading scores and reading ability can be improved.In this study,the author first analyzed the current situation of high school English reading teaching and the application of thematic context in high school English reading teaching at home and abroad.Based on context theory,constructivism and cohesion theory,the researcher conducted a 16-week teaching experiment.The research was carried out by using educational research tools as questionnaires,interviews and experiments.The experimental class carried out reading teaching based on the theme context,while the control class carried out bottom-up reading teaching.The pretest and post-test are based on four reading texts of the college entrance examination.The following three questions will be solved in this research:1.How does the teaching of English reading in senior high schools based on the theme thematic context students’ reading enthusiasm?2.How does the teaching of English reading in senior high schools based on the thematic context affect students’ reading performance?3.How does the teaching of English reading in senior high schools based on the thematic context affect students’ reading ability?After the experiment,the changes of reading enthusiasm,reading ability and reading achievement of the experimental class were investigated by questionnaire.Eight students in the experimental class were interviewed to understand the impact of teaching experiments on reading interest,analysis and interpretation of articles.Based on the analysis of the experimental data,it is concluded that the application of thematic context in senior English reading teaching can have a significant positive impact on students’ reading enthusiasm,reading ability and reading performance.Finally,the author also summarizes the deficiencies found in the experiment,and puts forward corresponding suggestions for teachers and students’ classroom teaching and follow-up research according to this study.
