Traditional reading teaching plays an important role in helping students to expand their vocabulary and focus on grammar learning.However,it ignores the teaching of thematic meaning in the reading materials when teaching textual knowledge.The reading teaching based on the exploration of thematic meaning emphasizes the in-depth understanding of the text theme and the cultivation of students’ thinking ability.This study aims to discuss how to apply the exploration of thematic meaning in senior high school English reading classes to implement more effective reading teaching.Besides,it attempts to answer the following three questions:(1)What effects does the reading teaching based on the exploration of thematic meaning have on senior high school students’ interest in English reading?(2)What effects does the exploration of thematic meaning have on students’ understanding of thematic meaning?(3)What is the influence of the exploration of thematic meaning on the English reading ability of senior high school students?This research first designed a teaching case suitable for the exploration for thematic meaning based on constructivism theory.The case realizes the application of thematic meanings in various reading teaching activities and achieves the purpose of continuously activating,enriching and constructing students’ knowledge experience.Then the researcher conducted questionnaires and tests in two parallel classes of the first grade of a senior high school in Xinyang.Before the experiment,a questionnaire survey was conducted on the two classes to understand the students’ interest in English reading learning and their understanding of thematic meaning under the current teaching model.At the same time,a pre-test was then conducted on the two classes to check whether their reading performance were at the same level.After the experiment,the students in the experimental class were distributed the post-questionnaire to understand the changes in students’ interest in reading and understanding of the thematic meaning.Besides,test papers of the same difficulty are used for post-test in the two classes to check whether there are any differences in students’ reading levels.All questionnaires and tests were analyzed by SPSS 25.0.The research found that(1)The reading teaching based on the exploration of thematic meaning has a positive impact on the students’ English reading interest in English learning in the experimental class.It shows that students can realize the importance of English reading learning and increase their concentration in class.Besides,students’ enthusiasm for participating in classroom activities in class is improved.(2)The reading teaching based on the exploration of thematic meaning can promote students’ understanding of thematic meaning.The results of post-questionnaire show that the students in the experimental class pay more attention to exploring thematic meaning after the experiment,and they can also better understand the thematic meaning.What’s more,the number of students who use the exploration of thematic meaning method in reading to deepen their understanding of the article has increased significantly,indicating that the reading teaching based on exploring of thematic meaning can deepen students’ understanding of article.(3)There are significant differences in English reading scores between the experimental class and the control class.The post-test scores of the students in the experimental class have improved significantly(P=0.000<0.05),but there has been no significant change in the scores of the students in the control class(P=0.289>0.05).It is mainly embodied in the significant improvement of the scores of the students in the experimental class on the detailed questions,guessing the meaning of words from the context questions and thematic meaning comprehension questions.It can be concluded that the application of exploration of thematic meaning to English reading teaching can improve the English reading performance of senior high school students to a certain extent.Through this research,the following teaching implications can be drawn: in reading teaching,teachers should focus on the exploration of thematic meaning as the main line throughout the entire reading class,and actively create teaching situations to stimulate students’ interest in reading and classroom participation initiative. |
