A Report On The Translation Of 2021 Report On The Work Of The Guangzhou Municipal Government

This translation report studies the project for translating the 2021 Report on the Work of the Guangzhou Municipal Government.Boasting a long history and strong comprehensive strength,Guangzhou is the political,economic,cultural,scientific and educational center of South China.Closely related to the economy,politics,society and people’s livelihood in Guangzhou,the annual Guangzhou Government Work Report serves as a crucial medium for everyone to be informed of the current policies of Guangzhou and as an indispensable part of publicity materials.The translation quality of the government work report determines the communication effect of foreign publicity texts,and even has a certain influence on raising our international voice and growing our country’s international status.In the report,the translator,based on Eco-translatology proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen,transformed the original text from linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions,and explored the methods to produce the target text that conforms to the linguistic habits of the target language and retains the same cultural information and communicative intention as the original text.In the linguistic dimension,for more natural and clearer translated text,diversified expression and omission can reduce the repetitive use of words;shift combined with sentence adjustment can be used to deal with noun redundancy;deletion of category nouns is often required.In the cultural dimension,specific adjustments are made based on the context for the translation of political and economic culture-loaded terms: one should stick to the form and content of the official translation if there are parallel texts;annotation and explanation can also be used to reveal the intended meaning of the cultural phrases.In the communicative dimension,literal translation and free translation are adopted to convey the hidden meaning of the metaphors;a series of connectives improve the logical relation of the target text to deliver the communicative intention accurately.The project not only provides an English version for many foreigners who want to learn about the development of Guangzhou but also offers a reference for the translation of political texts in the future.
