The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)(Ministry of Education,2022)has clearly included four dimensions of core English literacy--linguistic ability,thinking quality,cultural awareness and learning ability-in the curriculum standards for compulsory education.It can be seen that the quality of thinking is clearly listed as the training objective of English discipline.And as an important part of the core literacy,it is worth paying attention to and exploring.In daily teaching,teachers should also carry out in-depth discourse study,clarify the theme meaning,and analyze the meaning of text transmission from multiple levels and angles.Through the theme meaning,teachers constantly excavate the cultural connotation and educational value in reading teaching,grasp the main line of teaching and determine the teaching objectives and teaching difficulties based on the theme meaning.This study aims to answer the following three questions :(1)What is the current situation of the thinking qualities of middle school students,that is,logicality,criticality and creativity? What are the problems?(2)What are the effects of English reading teaching based on thematic meaning exploration on the thinking quality of middle school students?In order to solve the above problems,the author designed reading teaching based on thematic meaning according to Bloom’s theory of educational objective classification,intelligence theory focusing on thinking structure,constructivism learning theory,and conducted a one-semester action research.This action research is divided into two rounds.The first round serves as an adaptation stage for teachers and students to find problems and make adjustments,so as to prepare for the second round of action to collect data.The second round thoroughly carries out English reading teaching based on the exploration of thematic meaning,collects data through interviews,questionnaires,reading tests and other tools and analyzes these data.The main findings are as follows:First,the current status of middle school students thinking ability and first-line teachers reading class to train students’ thinking quality remains to be promoted.Second,English reading teaching based on the exploration of thematic meaning can improve students’ thinking quality and reading ability.Thirdly,English reading class based on thematic meaning exploration can design activities from three aspects: criticality,creativity and logic.Finally,in order to optimize English reading teaching based on thematic meaning,this paper puts forward the following five teaching implications :(1)Teachers should take students as the center in English reading class and pay attention to the cultivation of students’ thinking quality.(2)Teachers can design corresponding teaching activities based on thematic meaning exploration in English reading teaching class.(3)Teachers should study and read texts in depth according to the New Curriculum Standard.(4)Teachers should strengthen the creation of thematic context and explore the educational value of English reading class and text.(5)Teachers should learn during the whole life and constantly improve their professional abilities.
