| “English curriculum undertakes the task of developing students’ thinking ability”.according to the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 Edition).Thinking quality is one of the four essential traits of English Subject and the mental feature of the core quality of English discipline,according to the English Curriculum Standards for Ordinary Senior High Schools(2017 version).Reading is a process of interaction between thought and language.Students can foster thinking through reading,and reading teaching can facilitate the development of students’ thinking quality.However,current English reading instruction falls short of that goal.This mechanical,fragmented,and shallow reading instruction approach emphasizes information over ability and rote learning over thinking growth,severely impeding pupils’ English thinking quality.Therefore,this study intends to start from the existing problems in the current English reading teaching in primary schools,pay more attention to the theme meaning advocated by the new curriculum standards,and carry out reading teaching based on the theme meaning.Moreover,the main purpose of this study is to explore how to improve students’ thinking quality through the theme meaning based English reading teaching.In this study,46 fifth-grade students from a primary school in Wujiang district,Shaoguan city,Guangdong province,were chosen as research subjects for a one-year action research project.During the research,questionnaires,interviews,and classroom observation were employed to gather pertinent data.The following issues are the focus of this research.1.Can English reading teaching based on thematic meaning influence primary school students’ thinking quality?2.What’s the effect of English reading teaching based on thematic meaning on primary school students’ thinking quality?In the one-year teaching practice,two rounds of action research put forward a series of corresponding teaching activities,such as sorting out the text structure,forecast content development,judging ideas,story continuation,reporter interview,poster design and so on.Through the systematic analysis of quantitative data and qualitative data,it is found that: Firstly,the reading teaching based on thematic meaning can improve primary school students’ thinking quality to some extent.Secondly,theme-based English reading teaching can improve students’ logical thinking ability,critical thinking ability and innovative thinking ability.Such teaching measures as brainstorming,poster design and group cooperative learning can improve students’ ability of thinking quality. |
