A Translation Project Report Of A Long Way From Home(Part Ⅲ And Ⅳ)

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation practice.The original text of the practice is selected from the third and fourth parts of A Long Way from Home written by Peter Carey,a famous Australian writer.The novel tells a story of Mr.And Mrs.Bobbsey as well as Bachhuber who competed in a Redex Trial.The original text of A Long Way from Home was published but its Chinese version has not yet appeared.The translator hopes that the translation of A Long Way from Home will not only help Chinese readers to know something about Australian history,broadening their horizons,but also serve as research materials for relevant studies.The novel,A Long Way from Home,is characterized by unique narrative perspectives,exquisite characterization and vivid language,consisting of authentic expressions,such as slang,aboriginal language and rhetorical devices.Toury’s translation norms theory is adopted to ensure that the translation can reproduce the writing style of the original text and is acceptable to the target language readers.Toury believes that translation is restricted by preliminary norms,initial norms and operational norms,among which preliminary norms influence the choice of the original text,initial norms the selection of translation strategy and operational norms the practical translation methods applied in the practice.This translation practice enlightens me about the fact that Toury’s translation norms theory can guide the translation practice in the following aspects.Firstly,translation policy,features of the novel and the translator’s ability must be taken into consideration.Secondly,encountering distinctive expressions,special sentence patterns and culture-loaded words,the translator should adopt the strategy of adequate translation by keeping the original unchanged and adding something necessary as a way to deliver the original meaning.Yet,the strategy of acceptable translation should be implemented in terms of the differences between Chinese and English in the use of verbs and nouns,syntactic structure and cohesive devices,which can make the translation accepted by more readers.Lastly,the translator can,based on the translation methods provided by operational norms,bring the subjectivity into full play.At the macro level,the translator can use amplification,omission,division and changes of location while transformation of voice,conversion of part of speech and overstriking can be adopted at the micro level,making the translation more readable.
