A Report On C-E Translation Of Shaoxing Folklore(Chapter Two)

China has witnessed its global influence growing with the sharp rise of China’s economy.At this time,the world wants to learn more about China,and China wants to better introduce itself.Therefore,it is necessary for the translator to read some excellent traditional cultural works to learn more about this country from a deeper level.Shaoxing Folklore,written by Mr.Tu Guoping,focuses on the urban region of Shaoxing.It gives an insight into the traditional cultures of the Shaoxing area,as well as people’s reverence and veneration for life as it relates to the three major periods of gestation,marriage,and funeral in one’s life.Therefore,the translation of this book provides access to the history and culture of Shaoxing for foreign readers,which is of profound relevance to the promotion of Chinese traditional culture.The content translated by the translator is drawn from Chapter Two of this book,“Naming Customs”,which discusses culture in names,social meanings of names,and social and cultural awareness,providing a detailed introduction to the cultural connotations contained in Shaoxing people’s names.Many culture-loaded words,Chinese four-character idioms,nicknames,and chronicle-style Chinese sentences are among the difficult points that translators face during the translation process.The translator needs to use her subjective initiative and creativity to choose appropriate translation strategies,methods and skills when translating.Based on George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory,the translator guides her translation through the four translation steps of trust,aggression,incorporation and compensation,to achieve a balance between the source text and the target text,Shaoxing naming culture and Western culture.Moreover,the translation is more acceptable to foreign readers.All in all,the Hermeneutic Translation Theory has certain guiding significance for the translation of Shaoxing Folklore.The translation report is divided into four parts.First,it introduces the background of Shaoxing Folklore,the purpose and significance of translation,and the structure of this report;Second,it discusses the translation process;Third,case studies from trust,aggression,incorporation and restitution are conducted using Hermeneutic Translation Theory;Finally,it is concluded that the translator has fully practiced Hermeneutic Translation Theory in the process of translation,taking into account the cultural differences between Chinese and English,correctly exerting the translator’s subjectivity,and employing appropriate translation strategies and methods.
