| The source text is selected from the novel A Long Way from Home written by the famous Australian writer Peter Carey. The novel reveals the racial discrimination and oppression imposed on Australian aborigines by the white Europeans from two different perspectives. It is a masterpiece with black humour and historical importance. Therefore it is of great value in literature. The author selects the fifth chapter as the original text and adopts the three rules of Skopos theory, namely,Skopos rule,Coherence rule and Fidelity rule to solve the difficulties in literary translation. The project is carried out from three aspects including lexical translation, the translation of long and difficult sentences and rhetorical devices according to the three rules of Skopos. For lexical translation, the author tries to explore the implied meaning and identify the exact corresponding word by dictionaries to make a readable version. For the second, the author manages to deliver the fluent and idiomatic expressions by splitting, rearrangement, reconstructing, translation shifts, literal and free translation and specification. When handling rhetorical devices, the author expresses the deepest meaning of source text if impossible to maintain the original version.Through the process, the author realizes literary translation’s ultimate purpose is to achieve aesthetic value and deliver literary connotations, thus promoting cultural exchange and diversity. The Skopos theory emphasizes the purpose of the whole translation process, which obeys the rules in literary translation and thus helps the literary translation. The author should also consider the targeted readers’ expectations besides the communicative purposes to restore the source text’s cultural connotations and aesthetic value as possible. |
