Translation Of Literary Essay From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This is a Chinese-English translation project report,and the translation materials are excerpted from Vision,written by Tao Yong,an ophthalmologist as well as the victim of the accident in Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital.From the perspective of a doctor,this book tells his initial intention and experience of practicing medicine,as well as his thoughts on various aspects of life in his work experience.This translation project includes Chapter 2,3 and 19,which present the author’s speculation on the good and evil of human nature,his views on life and death and his prospects for future medicine.The background of the original project originates from the medical troubles in real life.As a victim of medical trouble,Dr.Tao Yong reflected on himself during the recovery period,and remained positive toward medicine and life after recovery.The translator hopes that through this project,readers can not only appreciate Tao Yong’s generosity and great wisdom,but also understand and sympathize with countless doctors struggling in the front-line,so as to completely eliminate medical troubles.Vision is a collection of literary essays with clean and fluent language.The whole book is unpretentious,but shows great wisdom and true knowledge.The difficulty of this translation practice lies in preserving the style of the original text while taking care of the linguistic features of the target language,and accurately conveying the emotion that the author wants to express.First of all,the difficulty at the lexical level is mainly exhibited in the use of culture-loaded words.Secondly,in terms of sentences,the difficulty is to integrate Chinese short sentences logically.With Skopos theory as the guide,the writer analyzes the difficult problems encountered in the project,and adopts translation skills such as free translation,omission,transliteration,and amplification to solve the problems at lexical and syntactic levels.Through this translation practice,the writer realized that translators must accurately convey the author’s creative intention on the basis of ensuring the fluency of the translation as well as the acceptability of the translation for target readers.
