Terminology research in China has observed three phases: the phase of introduction, review of foreign terminology theories and localization of domestic terminology theories. At present, except for the terms that have already entered Chinese, most of the terms in Chinese are mainly introduced via English-Chinese translation, and the standardization of term translation needs to be systematically studied in the process of English term introduction. The purpose of this paper is to explore how to choose a highly acceptable translation of English terms in the process of English to Chinese translation.Based on the theories and methods used in other fields(such as search engines and journals)for determining highly acceptable content,it is believed that the judgment of highly acceptable content in the above fields is based on three factors: whether the scope of the linked content is accurate;whether the media publications that include their articles are highly accepted in this field;and whether the overall use of language is formal enough to determine whether the content is acceptable enough.Based on this idea, this paper proposes a usage based term translation selection model(abbreviated as UBTS),and proposes three hypotheses regarding the selection of term translations with high acceptability: the acceptability of the term translation is related to the definition scope of the Chinese translation;the acceptability of the term translation is related to the public acceptance of the media publications in which the Chinese translation appears;and the acceptability of the term translation is related to the degree of formality of the Chinese translation. This paper collects 64 Chinese translation versions of different English terms in different periods, and uses Fisher’s exact test to to determine the degree of association between the variables. The data analysis proves that the variables in the hypothesis have a significant correlation with the acceptability of judging the translation versions of the terms, which confirms the validity of the term translation selection model.
