Terminology Management And Term Translation Of Darwin’s Unfinished Symphony

With the development of national strategies for cultural powers,the spread of culture has become increasingly prominent and the demand for relevant translation has been increasing.In translation practice,term is of great importance which links languages to some specific fields.Humanities and social science texts have many terms.These terms do not have obvious features and are not highly recognizable like professional terms.However,the terms still have specific definitions in a specific context and need unified translations.The article is based on the English-Chinese translation project Darwin’s Unfinished Symphony: How Culture Made the Human Mind.In order to solve the problems that may be encountered in term translation,the author discussed the terminology management in translation practice and proposed the corresponding translation strategies of proper nouns,specialized terms and text-specific words.The research material contains both humanities and social sciences such as cultural evolution as well as many natural subjects such as biology,genetics,anthropology and mathematical modeling.Therefore the research material is typical and deserves to be studied in depth.In the paper,the author selected 30 translation cases in the English-Chinese translation of Darwin’s Unfinished Symphony.We got the mini terms database which includes 129 proper nouns,215 specialized terms and 76 text-specific words.It analyzes the practice from both technology and translation practice.In the process of terminology management,the author chose the Tmxmall Public Cloud Platform as the terminology management system for its easier operation and clearer interface.Its basic functions including the production of parallel texts,the extraction and filtration of terms and the production of term database were used during the research.In the process of term translation,the paper focuses on three types of terms: proper nouns,specialized terms and text-specific words and discusses their translation techniques through specific examples.For proper nouns and specialized words that already have authoritative translation,the author adopted the customary name;for the text-specific words,the author translated based on the basic terms features and combined with the text characteristics and the context and rationally named the words.Finally,the article expects to improve the terminological consciousness and provide reference for the practice of term translation in the future.
