A Practice Report On Semantic Shift In Chinese Translation Of Elements Of Shipping

Under the guidance of semantic shift theory,with the English maritime texts as the materials of translation practice,aiming at the problems found during the translation practice;the practice report explores and discusses the strategies of semantic shift in Chinese translation of this text genre.The selected texts are the two chapters in Elements of Shipping.As maritime texts,the characteristics are of being scientific and precise,and strongly professional,full of professional terminologies as well as the long and difficult sentence patterns.Aiming at the problems of semantic fuzziness of the compound words,the issue of orientation fuzziness of the postpositive attributives and the complex structure of passive sentences,strategies have been proposed respectively as the semantic shift strategy for compound words which includes the reversing semantic shift and the fusion semantic shift.,the semantic shift strategy for postpositive attributives which includes the preposition semantic shift and the converting semantic shift,and the semantic shift of the passive sentences which includes the semantic shift from passive to active sentences,and from the passive sentences to the non-subject sentences.The translation practice and the case analysis indicates that the semantic shift has certain guiding significance and practice value for the Chinese translation of maritime texts,and has certain implications for the translation of this text genre.
