Northern Shaanxi folk songs are traditional folk songs in Northern Shaanxi,and are an important part of China’s local traditional culture.As a reflection and a representative of the Northern Shaanxi people’s local life and the local socio-historical culture,Northern Shaanxi folk songs can serve as a bridge to link traditional Chinese culture with other cultures.Meanwhile,rich culture-loaded words exist in Northern Shaanxi folk songs,carrying the colorful culture of Northern Shaanxi.In recent years,the research on the English translation of the culture-loaded words in Northern Shaanxi folk songs starts to attract attention from scholars.Therefore,this thesis also makes preliminary research on the English translation of the culture-loaded words which frequently appear in Northern Shaanxi folk songs and carry the culture of Northern Shaanxi.Postcolonial translation theory is a kind of application and research paradigm of postcolonialism in translation studies.It is a new perspective in translation studies and is based on deconstructionism,polysystem theory,hermeneutics,teleology,descriptism,and new historicism.And "domestication","foreignization","hybridity" are its core concepts.Since the end of the 20th century,domestic scholars have gradually intensified their research on postcolonial translation and brought it to maturity.On the basis of postcolonial translation theory and its core concepts of domestication,foreignization and hybridity,the present study analyzes the English translation of the culture-loaded words in Northern Shaanxi folk songs.First and foremost,this thesis expounds the previous studies of postcolonial translation theory,and culture-loaded words translation;and then explains the core concepts of postcolonial translation theory,on the basis of which this thesis make a detailed analysis of the translation of the culture-loaded words in Northern Shaanxi folk songs from the respective aspects of domestication,foreignization and hybridity.This study has arrived at two conclusions:1)Postcolonial translation theory can provide theoretical guidance for the English translation of the culture-loaded words in Northern Shaanxi folk songs and we can adopt the translation strategy of "foreignization first while domestication and hybridity second" in the translation of the culture-loaded words in Northern Shaanxi folk songs;2)the English translation of the culture-loaded words in Northern Shaanxi folk songs on the basis of postcolonial translation theory not only helps target readers have better understanding of culture of Northern Shaanxi,but also enables target readers to deepen understanding of Northern Shaanxi folk songs from a new view,and particularly has a great significance for transmitting Chinese local culture to the world. |
