With the development of globalization, the cultural communication of different countries is becoming closer and closer. Under this background, in1980s, a great many scholars begin to study translation from the viewpoint of culture criticism and cultural study. An important revolution of "Cultural Turn" takes place in the translation circle. After that, the postcolonial translation study comes into being and becomes popular.Different from traditional translation study, the postcolonial translation theory insists that "there is no truly equal dialogue among different cultures, never for a moment", opposing the Utopian theoretical assumption of equal language and culture and its pursuit of equivalent translated text proposed by traditional translation theory. Therefore, by importing the "hybridity" concept proposed by Homi Bhabha, the study of this thesis is to point out shortcoming of the stereotyped traditional translation theory and its binary opposites of traditional translation strategies, promoting the application of "hybridity" in translation to offer a new solution for the traditional opposing translation strategies. From the viewpoint of the traditional translation theory, the translation strategies adopted in the translation practice are either domestication or foreignization. The two translation strategies are in a binary opposite relationship. However, the dispute over domestication and foreignization is terminated by the emergence of "hybridity". The process of translation actually is a course of hybridity, and all the translated texts are embodied with hybridity. To some extent, the linguistic and cultural features of both source language and target language can be reserved in the translated text by means of hybridity, which can facilitate cultural communication, resist culture hegemony, and even boost the development of target language. As to the so-called hybridity of the translated text, it refers to the mix of heterogeneous elements of the source language into the target language, so the translated text will contain the linguistic, cultural and literary elements of both languages and be marked with hybridity. No matter how idiomatic the translated text is, or no matter how capable the translator is, hybridity is inevitable in the process of translation.To support the above statements, this thesis is going to make a tentative study of the inevitability and necessity of hybridity in translation, with the support of Homi Bhabha’s hybridity theory and the case analysis of the translation of Chinese classic dramatic text Tea House. And it can be concluded that Ying’s translation is neither purely domestication-oriented nor completely foreignizaiton-oriented. The concept "hybridity" is applied into and filled with his translation, reflected not only at the linguistic aspect of the translation, but also at both literary and cultural translation levels.The thesis is made up of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction part, making a brief summary of the research background, significance, methods and the organization of the thesis. The second chapter is about the literature review. The existing studies of hybridity in the translation by Chines and western scholars and the studies of translation of Tea House are discussed in this part. The third chapter is the theoretical support of the thesis. By the summary of Bakhtin’s heteroglossia theory and Homi Bhabha’s hybridity theory, we can have a good understanding of hybridity theory. And this chapter also focuses on the enlightenment of hybridity on postcolonial translation theory, which is a summary of the influence of hybridity in terms of translation study and mainly servers for the following analysis chapter. The fourth chapter is the case study of the hybridity phenomenon existing in the translation of Tea House at linguistic, cultural and literary levels respectively. The fourth chapter is the conclusion part. It makes a summary of the major findings and the limitations of the thesis.
