A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Post-Modifiers Of Nouns In Shipping Law (Chapters 9-11)

This report selects the maritime legal text,Shipping Law,as its research object.The book is the eighth edition revised by three specialists in maritime law,namely N.J.J.Gaskell,C.Debattista and R.J.Swatton,from the Institute of Maritime Law,University of Southampton,and was published by Pitman Publishing Ltd.in 1987.The selected text is characterized by precise and formal expressions as well as complex sentence structures.And in order to express the legal regulations clearly and accurately,it contains a large number of post-modifiers of nouns,which makes it more difficult to translate.Therefore,the author mainly focuses on the post-modifiers of nouns.Under the guidance of the Catford’s Theory of Translation Shift,the author summarizes five translation methods,namely inversion,division,conversion,linear and combining translation,to address the prepositional phrases,non-finite phrases and relative clauses that appear frequently in the selected text.When translating prepositional phrases and non-finite phrases,the methods of inversion translation,conversion translation and linear translation are used more often.When translating relative clauses,the translator often uses the division translation and linear translation.And when translating those post-modifiers of nouns with complex structures,the combining translation is ofte n used.It is hoped that the translation methods summarized in this report can provide reference for the Chinese translation in related fields.
