Problems And Solutions Of Translating Post-modifiers Of Nouns In English

Post-modifiers of nouns in English refer to the modifiers that appear after English nouns,mainly including prepositional phrases,non-finite clauses,relative clauses and complements of some pre-positional modifiers.There are various forms,complex functions and long sentence structures in post-modifiers of nouns in English,which is easy to cause difficulties in translation.Many scholars have made deep researches on the classification,characteristics and translation methods of post-modifiers of English nouns.These researches provide sufficient academic nutrients for the writing of this translation practice report.This paper focuses on the translation of post-modifiers of English nouns,and chooses chapter six of Human and Lions: Conflict,Conservation and Coexistence as the translation text.After analysis and conclusion,the translation difficulties of post-modifiers of the English nouns in this paper can be divided into three types: diversified prepositional phrases after English nouns,including the juxtaposition structure and nesting structure of prepositional phrases after English nouns;combination of many other components with non-predicate verbs after English nouns,such as prepositional phrases and nominal clauses;complex and difficult attributive clauses after English nouns,which is embodied in the superposition of multiple clauses in the compound attributive clause after English nouns and the separation of the antecedent and clause in the attributive clause after English nouns.In view of the above translation difficulties,this paper puts forward the corresponding solutions: first,the inversion for juxtaposition structure of prepositional phrases and the amplification for nesting structure of prepositional phrases can be used to solve the problem of diversified prepositional phrases after English words;secondly,for the combination of prepositional phrases and non-predicate verbs,conversion can be used,while for the combination of nominal clauses and non-predicate verbs,structural modification can be adapted,which can effectively solve the difficulties of the combination of various components after nouns with non-predicate verbs;finally,about the complex and difficult attributive clause after English nouns,this paper adopts the split method for complex attributive clauses and the reorganization for separated attributive clauses.It is hoped that this paper can provide some help to other translators in translating the post-modifiers of the English nouns.
