| With the rapid development of shipping industry, the number of ships sailing at sea gradually increases, and maritime accidents occur from time to time. The maritime accident investigation report is an important text to record the key information such as the facts and causes of the accident, accident prevention and recommendations. And the study of the report can help enhance the awareness of maritime transportation safety, thus promoting the sustainable development of China’s maritime safety shipping industry. This translation report takes the post-translation editing case of machine translation of Report on the Investigation of Fire Aboard Small Passenger Vessel Conception as the study object and uses German translation theorist Ernst-August Gutt’s translation theory as a guide. It employs the case analysis with literature review as the research method to summarize and analyze the types of machine translation errors at both lexical and syntactic levels. At the lexical level, the machine mistranslated some technical,sub-technical,and non-technical words.Among them,in the part of non-technical words, the post-translation editing of abstract nouns, conjunctions, titles and ship names are typical objects of analysis. At the syntactic level, machine translation suffered from the problems such as confusing order and rigid morphology due to the syntactic differences between Chinese and English. To address the above types of machine translation errors, the author adopts post-translation editing strategies such as “conventional translation”,additional category words, word sense conversion, sequence adjustment, transcreation and backward translation to make the translation more accurate and smoother and to create the best contextual effect for readers, with a view to providing practical references for Chinese translation work in related translation fields. |
