The material selected in this translation report is from the eighth edition of Shipping Law.The book is jointly revised by N.J.J.Gaskell,C.Debattista and R.J.Swatton,British specialists in maritime law from the Institute of Maritime Law,University of Southampton and published by Bitman Publishing Ltd.in 1987.It belongs to maritime text featuring formal expressions and complex sentence structures. In the process of translation, the author finds that parentheses are used frequently in long sentences and have various functions and flexible position changes, which adds the difficulty of text translation. Therefore, this report focuses on the English-Chinese translation of parentheses. On the basis of Text Type Theory of Reiss Katharine and the phase of analysis and phase of reverbalization, this report studies the specific application of parentheses in combination with its functions and draws the following translation conclusions. As for parentheses that require no change in sentence structure or order of source text, linear translation is adopted. To match the Chinese language characteristics that parentheses with summary, cohesion and emphasis functions are at the beginning of sentences, preposition is adopted. To avoid the disruption of sentence structure caused by parentheses, the combination translation method is adopted. To precisely convey the content of source text and achieve smooth translation, recasting is adopted. It is hoped that the four translation methods summarized in this report can provide positive references for the translation of maritime text and the English-Chinese translation methods of parentheses.
