English-Chinese Translation Of Terms In Cultural Studies

This report is based on Forging Romantic China,the cultural study introducing the romantic sinology and its influence on British understanding of China during the romantic period.Since the book contains interdisciplinary and cross-cultural terms,and there has been few researches on terminology translation in the field,this report discusses the translation principles and translation techniques of terms in cultural studies.Guided by the previous studies on terminology,the translator recognized the definition,features and translation principles of terms,and thus established strong awareness of terms.The terms from the source text are in the research field of sinology,orientalism,and Chinese thoughts and culture.Before translation,the translator analyzed the features of the terminology in different fields and divided the terms into two categories,i.e.terms of sinology and orientalism,and terms of Chinese thoughts and culture.Since term represents essential concepts of the subject,it is important to know the specialized knowledge in the subject.In translating these terms in sinology and orientalism,the translator conformed to the conventions for those terms with standardized translation,and applied literal translation techniques for those without standardized translation.In translating terms of Chinese thoughts and culture,the translator applied the back-translation technique to find original Chinese terms.The translator hopes that the report can be helpful to the translation of terms in cultural studies,especially the sinological studies,and provide cases and references for translators and researchers.
