Traditional Chinese medicine, a unique classic medical system of China, is based on the“Three Teachings” of Chinese traditional philosophy, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism,as an integration of the essence of the doctrines of great Chinese philosophers. TCM, with itsadvanced theoretical system, scientific therapy and humane therapy, has made greatcontributions to the nation’s reproduction and development. In recent years, with the rise ofthe comprehensive national power (CNP) of China, Chinese medicine has attracted more andmore attention from the outside world. Meanwhile, the demand for traditional Chinesemedicine translation is growing rapidly. However, with the cultural exchanges becomingdeeper and more extensive, the problems in Chinese medicine translation are also increasing, and some may even hamper the internationalization of TCM. Many scholars and translatorshave engaged themselves in the TCM translation activity for ages, and accumulated richexperiences, which has laid the solid foundation for the spread of TCM. However, due totranslators’ inadequate knowledge on cultural background, professional knowledge andtranslation theory, the English translation of Chinese medicine has not formulated unifiedprinciples and accepted methods, especially for the standardization of translation ofterminology, which makes the reader at sea. Therefore, the author of this thesis will borrowthe cherished experience from the predecessors, to analyze the principles and methods for theterminology translation of Chinese medicine from the perspective of culture. In this way, wecan share our traditional Chinese culture essence with the world with the Chinese medicineterminology as a powerful carrier on one hand, and on the other hand, to make my humblecontribution to the standardization of Chinese medicine translation.
