| The translation material of this report is excerpted from the second and fourth chapters of the book Fathoming the Cosmos and Ordering the World: The Yijing(I-Ching,or Classic of Changes)and Its Evolution in China by the American sinologist Richard J.Smith.The book tells the development of Book of Changes in China in a concise language. This translation is to back-translate the knowledge of the English version of Book of Changes into Chinese, which is characterized by “back translation”.Guided by Berman’s “Respecting the other” theory, this paper focuses on back translation of the terms, proper nouns and quotations in the Book of Changes. In order to respect the author, ensure the consistency between the target text and the original, and facilitate readers to achieve cultural correspondence, this paper translates proper nouns and quotations as literally as possible and with the aid of annotations, while terms are translated back into original. This method can not only guarantee the accuracy of the original text, but also facilitate readers’ comparison of different texts.Through this translation mode, readers of the target text can see “their culture in the others’ eyes”,which helps them understand their own culture from the perspective of cultural differences. It is of some value for studying the translation of Chinese classics into foreign languages as well as promoting the “Going Global” of the classical Chinese culture. |
