The new curriculum standard puts forward specific requirements for primary school students’ English reading ability.Reading is a skill that every student must master.If they only rely on words to understand reading materials,the reading process will be very boring and difficult to stimulate students’ interest in English reading.The English picture book combines boring words with vivid and exquisite pictures to describe a story,which can make students experience visual enjoyment in the process of reading,understand the text information more intuitively and vividly,and stimulate students’ internal driving force and English reading ability.English picture books are in line with the law of primary school students’ thinking and cognitive development,so teachers can not only use the existing teaching materials,but also carry out picture book reading teaching appropriately.The domestic research on English picture books in primary schools mainly focuses on the selection of English picture books,strategy research and application research of picture book reading teaching.The research time on English picture book reading teaching is relatively short,and a complete and effective teaching system has not been formed yet.Constructivist learning theory is recognized as the most modern and effective guiding role in teaching.This theory emphasizes that learning is that learners take the initiative to complete the construction of knowledge on the basis of existing knowledge and experience and in a certain social and cultural environment.Constructivist learning theory holds that the class should be student-centered,but the guiding role of teachers cannot be ignored.The author closely connects primary school English picture book reading teaching with constructivist learning theory,in order to explore how to use constructivist learning theory to guide primary school English picture book reading teaching,and use practice to prove its feasibility under this guidance.The author carried out a one semester English picture book reading teaching for 110 students in two classes,in order to study whether constructivist learning theory can effectively stimulate primary school students’ reading interest and improve primary school students’ English reading ability and reading strategies.Before the experiment,the author investigated the English reading ability of the students in the two classes through a questionnaire,and compared the two classes through the pre-test and post-test.After the experiment,the students in the experimental class were interviewed randomly to understand their views on this new teaching model.The research shows that the application of constructivist learning theory in English picture book reading teaching in primary schools can improve their reading interest,help them master different reading strategies,and improve their reading ability.Finally,the thesis also discusses the Enlightenment of this study to the teaching of English picture book reading in primary schools.Due to the limited personal level and some restrictive conditions in the experiment,I hope to provide some help for future teaching research.
