The translation material of this thesis is from Chinese Herbal Tonic Paste(《中华膏滋》),written by Dr.Hou Bin.This book introduces the paste from different aspects, including the historical origin, selection of materials, and principles of application, etc.,which helps to let people understand the paste and use it.Communicative translation, proposed by Peter Newmark, attempts to render the meaning of the original work in such a way that is acceptable and comprehensible to the target language readers.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory, the translator makes a step-by-step analysis and discussion of source text from the lexical, syntactical and textual levels. At the lexical level, the standard of the proper nouns and TCM terms is the point.Accordingly, the translator chooses the appropriate standards. At the syntactical level, how to accurately convey the meaning of the long sentences and four-character sentences is the difficulty in translation. For this, the translator chooses the amplification or ellipsis in a way acceptable to the target language readers. At the textual level, personal anaphora and other methods are used to achieve textual cohesion and coherence in translation,so as to conform to the habits of English expression. The translator hopes that this translation practice helps to contribute to the spread and communication of the paste, and let more people understand the TCM culture.
