With the reformation of English tests for senior school entrance in Ningxia,the examination is transferred from the previous examination of students’ knowledge to the examination of students’ logic thinking abilities.Among them,the English examination mainly focuses on the four skills,listening,speaking,reading and writing.In the nearest reformation of English tests for senior school entrance in Ningxia,the speaking part examines students’ ability of repeating after listening,namely,oral writing.But in the actual teaching,because of the teaching arrangements,students do not have enough time to do writing trainings,which leads to the result that students are weak in writing.It is imperative under such a circumstance to improve students’ writing abilities.At the present stage,the students in Grade 7 in the author’s school are extremely weak in writing.Writing,as the key and difficult part in English teaching,does not receive enough attention.Besides,the English teachers often separate writing from reading and ignore the relationship between the two.Therefore,the research endeavors to do research on combining the teaching of reading and writing to improve the students’ writing levels.The study selected a class in the 7th grade of a junior middle school as the research object.The research started from choosing the textbooks of extracurricular graded reading,which is based on the Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Goodman’s whole language approach,and gave students some reading tasks and ask them to write reading notes.Also,the questionnaire,personal interviews and after-reading communication are applied to do research on effects of extracurricular graded reading on English writing ability.The study has shown that Extracurricular Graded Reading has some effects on junior middle school students’ English writing ability.
