English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Revised)clearly stipulates that the amount of extracurricular reading for junior high school students should accumulate more than 150,000 words.However,the researchers found that students have some problems with extracurricular reading.Insufficient reading time and lack of suitable reading materials and guidance lead it difficult for students to take part in extracurricular reading;students were not interested in extracurricular reading and the reading atmosphere was inactive.Graded reading is one of the specific application forms of stratified teaching in English extracurricular reading,but there is few relevant action research in junior high schools towards extracurricular reading.This research is based on action research.The research included 29 junior high school students in total.Data is mostly gathered through pre-and post-questionnaires,pre-and post-tests,and interviews.Selected reading lists published by FLTRP were employed as reading materials and graded reading training was carried out for thirteen weeks.As a result,under the instruction of the input hypothesis and constructivism theory,this action research seeks to implore effective ways to carry out graded reading activities,as well as widen the words and influence students’ reading interests,attitudes,etc.by applying graded reading to English extracurricular reading.The three research questions are as follows:1.How can junior high school students be organized to participate in extracurricular reading activities through graded reading?2.Can the current extracurricular reading of junior high school students be a change for the better?3.What effect does graded reading have on junior high school students’ reading?Collected data has shown that through the selection of appropriate reading materials,the use of graded reading for extracurricular reading is an effective way of reading.With hurdles cleared as lacking reading time,reading materials and guidance,the environment of English Extracurricular Reading in junior high school is changing for the better.Furthermore,graded reading helps to expand vocabulary,and students’ reading interests,attitudes,and confidence are improved.Finally,the researchers put forward targeted opinions based on the problems existing in graded reading,in order to provide reference suggestions for better promoting junior high school students’ extracurricular reading.
