A Subjectivity Study On The Speculative Modal Adverb Gaibuhui 该不会

The thesis studies speculative modal adverb ‘gaibuhui’ from the diachronic and synchronic perspective,which investigates the forming process,motivations and mechanisms of solidification,features for three dimensions and subjectivity of‘gaibuhui’.The paper includes five chapters.In chapter 1,we briefly explain the background and significance of the research,introduce the research status of speculative modal adverb,point out the lack of previous studies,describe the ideas and methods of the research and introduce the data sources applied in the thesis.In chapter 2,we classify and define gaibuhui from synchronic field,which includes ‘gaibuhui a’ and ‘gaibuhui b’.‘Gaibuhui b’ can be considered as a speculative modal adverb from three aspects: solidity,expression of speculative mood and function of speculative modal adverb.Based on this,‘gaibuhui b’ is determined as the research object.In chapter 3,guided by the theory of continuous context of grammaticalization,we discuss the lexicalization and grammaticalization of ‘gaibuhui’,along with its motivations and mechanisms,the variation of subjectivity.Firstly,the solidification of the speculative modal adverb ‘gaibuhui b’ is mainly realized through its lexicalization in a continuous context,which semantic ambiguation plays a key role.‘Gaibuhui b’continues grammaticalizing after becoming a word,with the performance of speculative meaning’s reduction and the appearance of the pragmatic function.In the process of lexicalization and grammaticalization,the subjectivity of ‘gaibuhui b’ is also gradually strengthened.The subjective attitude of the speaker changes from ‘believing that VP will not happen’to‘not sure if VP will happen’to‘believing VP will happen but with an unwilling attitude’.The certainty varies from‘believing’to‘doubting’to ‘believing’.Secondly,we explain the solidification mechanism and motivation of‘gaibuhui b’,including the change of syntactic environment,the negative meaning reduction of ‘buhui’,the high-frequency use of network language and the change of speaker’s certainty.In chapter 4,we study the syntactic,semantic and pragmatic characteristics of‘gaibuhui’ under the guidance of subjectivity theory.In terms of syntax,we discussed syntactic positions,the options of sentence types and tenses,the subjectivity embodied in the syntactic positions.No matter which position ‘gaibuhui’ locates,it owns the perspective of the speaker’s subject.However,the speaker’s subjectivity varies according to different positions,which the sequence presents: being used alone > at the beginning of the sentence > in the sentence.In terms of semantics,we discuss the speaker’s speculation,uncertainty and counter expectation of ‘gaibuhui’by combining speaker’s perspective,emotion and cognition.In terms of pragmatics,‘gaibuhui’s functions includes highlighting the focus,expressing politely,transmitting doubt and textual cohesion.The thesis explains the solidification process and mechanism of the speculative modal adverb‘gaibuhui’,also investigates its characteristics of three dimensions and subjectivity,which help linguists pay more attention to the speculative modal adverb,so as to deepen the relevant research and cognition.
