In recent years, the field of cosmology and astronomy has been widely concerned and highly valued. With China’s science and technology advancement, there has been considerable development in cosmology and astronomy research in China. When the achievements have been made, the certain gap between China and foreign countries in this field should also be realized. The UK has advanced technology in space astronomy research, which has had a profound influence on the development of this field, representing certain reference significance for the study of cosmology and astronomy in China. The translation project is the E-C translation of the sci-tech book The Invisible Universe(Chapter Nine)authored by Matthew Bothwell,a translation task with 12,382 words and 19,758 Chinese characters entrusted by GTCOM(Global Tone Communication Technology Co.,Ltd.).The text presents a detailed account of the history and progress of cosmology and astronomy, passing on relevant knowledge to readers. This is a typical functional and informative source text, which conveys objective, concise, natural, and standard language, containing precise information and conventional expressions.Based on the above textual features, this translation practice is completed under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the translator classifies and summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation process and the corresponding solutions from lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. At the lexical level, literal translation is adopted to translate technical terms, the translation techniques of part of speech conversion and diction are used to translate nominalization and abbreviations. At the syntactic level, the techniques of voice shift and restructuring are applied to deal with sentences with passive voice and long and complex sentences. At the textual level, the translator pays close attention to the logical cohesion and semantic coherence to tackle with confused logic, scattered sentences and inconsistent language in the initial translation, making the final translation meet the requirements. The translation practice report applies the functional equivalence theory to guide EST translation of cosmology and astronomy.Through this translation practice, the translator has deepened the understanding of the functional equivalence theory and its applicability, improved the capability to use the functional equivalence theory to guide translation practice, and provided certain references for the translation of sci-tech texts of cosmology and astronomy in the future.
