A Report On The Translation Of Sci-Tech News Under The Guidance Of The Functional Equivalence Theory

Currently,people have a growing desire to acquire the newest information over the world amid the rapid development of science and technology as well as the accelerated progress of globalization.As an effective medium for information dissemination,scientific and technological news plays an increasingly important role in informing readers of the latest developments in the field of science and technology.Therefore,it is of great significance to translate English sci-tech news into Chinese.Generally speaking,sci-tech news is characterized by accuracy,objectivity and logicality,which involves many long complex sentences,including attributive clauses.Due to the syntactic differences between English and Chinese,translators should make an overall analysis of the source texts before translation,and adopt proper translation methods for translation.This translation practice is based on three pieces of scientific and technological news selected from SCIENCE,which introduces some findings respectively related to clinical research and technological innovation.In this report,the author attempts to explore some effective translation methods to translate various attributive clauses under Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Concretely speaking,division is used when the subordinate clause is loosely related to the main clause;combination is applied when the subordinate clause is closely related to the main clause;and the conversion method is flexibly employed to translate adverbial-attributive clauses.As we know,Nida’s functional equivalence theory emphasizes the functional equivalence of language rather than the formal correspondence,which provides strong guidance for the translation of the scientific and technological texts.This paper hopes to help English learners to better combine translation theory with practice,and bring some inspiration for translators and researchers in the field of scientific and technological news.
