The Peony Pavilion is a legendary script written by Tang Xianzu. It is an outstanding works in the history of Chinese opera, which has been translated into many foreign languages, and spreads widely at home and abroad. There are over 300 allusions quoted in The Peony Pavilion. These allusions are loaded with profound cultural connotation, and difficult to translate. The author chooses the full translation of the American Sinologist Cyril Birch, the full translation of the famous Chinese translator Wang Rongpei, and the latest selected translation of Xu Yuanchong as the research subject. The author first compares the three translators’ source language and target language eco-environment,and discovers that the translators will choose the translation strategy according to their target readers,so that the translation can survive the fittest in the target language eco-environment.And then the author studies on the allusion translation strategy from language, culture and communication dimension. The allusions are divided into religious allusion, allusion with storyline, allusion of culture-loaded word, allusion of poem and allusion with obscene language and analyzed in turn.Through the case analysis,it can be found that all the three translators intend to achieve the balance of the three-dimension,but they have their own priorities.Birch’s translation focuses more on language and culture dimension,Wang’s translation focuses more on language and communication dimension, while Xu’s translation focuses more on cultural and communication dimension.Eco-translatology is new and solid theory, and so far few scholars have studied the translation of allusions in The Peony Pavilion under the theory of eco-translatology.Therefore,it is of great value to take the eco-translatology as a guide to study the allusion translation strategies from its perspective of three-dimensional transformation.
