The quality of sleep is an important factor to maintain physical and mental health.Sleep problems among college students have been identified as an international public health problem.college students with poor sleep quality will suffer a series of negative physical and mental consequences.More specifically, students with sleep problems are more likely experience depression or other mental problems.Stress college students perceived is an important factor of their sleep quality.Nowadays, college students are under increasing pressure from study, job hunting and interpersonal communication.Nonetheless, not all students who perceive great pressure suffer from sleep problems. The relationship between perceived stress and sleep quality among college students remains controversial. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the causal relationship between stress college students perceived and their sleep quality,as well as to clarify the moderated variables of this relationship. The present study conducted two studies, that is,a-month longitudinal follow-up study and cross-sectional investigation. In study 1,150 college students were longitudinally investigated with the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale and Pittsburgh sleep Quality Index in a month. The results indicated that the stress participants perceived a month ago(T1)predicted their sleep quality(T2)significantly,suggesting that perceived stress was the cause of college students’ sleep quality. In study 2,650 college students volunteered to participate the study, and they filled in Chinese Perceived Stress Scale,Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version. The results indicated that both sense of out of control and feeling of tension, two factors of stress, predicted college students’ sleep quality positively and significantly.Mobile phone dependence moderates the effect of out-of-control on college students sleep quality, but the moderating effects didn’t exist in the relationship between feeling of tension and sleep quality.Together, the results of study 1 and 2 suggested that the stress college students perceived is a cause ot their sleep quality;for the students with high level of mobile phone dependence, the more the out-of-control they perceived, the poorer sleep quality they suffer. These results provide implication for mental health in universities and colleges. In order to improve college students sleep quality and then promote their mental health, student affairs centres in universities and colleges, especially the centres for mental health education would take measures to help students evaluate their stressful event in a appreciate and reasonable way on one hand,on the other hand, the effective emotion adjustment instruction is needed, because it can reduce the negative effect of stress events on college students’ emotional intensity, and promote their sense of daily life control.furthermore, attention still needs to be paid to mobile phone use among college students, and targeted and effective measures and instruction should be adopted according to their gender and majors.
