A Study On English Translation Of The Defamiliarized Subtitles Of Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon

Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon is an excellent martial arts film which has been highly praised internationally.The translation of subtitle has piqued the interest of academics in the subject of translation.Although there are many studies,most of them discuss subtitles from the perspective of certain translation theory or study the characteristic vocabulary in subtitles.Little attention has been paid to the study of translation of defamiliarized subtitles.Film is another form of expression of literature with the components of language,story,structure,ideas,angles,moods and shots transport literature to audiences in new forms,in which language plays an integral role.Therefore,how to translate the defamiliarized subtitles in movie determines whether the movie can be conveyed perfectly to the audience.Based on the defamiliarization theory,this paper selects the subtitle translation of Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon as the research object and analyzes how the defamiliarized subtitles is translated.The alliteration and rhyme are analyzed in the phonetics.The lexical aspect mainly explores abnormal collocations,rhetoric and culturally loaded words.The syntactic aspect includes parallel sentence patterns,repetitive sentence patterns and grammatical violation sentences.And the textual level is characterized by register variation as entry point.The analysis reveals that some of the defamiliarized subtitles are translated through literal translation or augmented translation.The others are ignored and only the meaning of the original text is conveyed to the audience by means of paraphrasing,as the presentation of a film is different from that of ordinary literature,and the aesthetic time of the audience group and the fluency of the viewing should be taken into account.It is hoped that through the translation research on the defamiliarized subtitles of Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon,the translation research of the defamiliarized subtitles will attracted more attention.In return,the translation of the defamiliarized subtitles can be better presented to the western audience so that the audience can better understand the Chinese film culture.
