| The term "dandy" is closely related to the ancient Chinese dress culture. This kind of group of dandies really existed in ancient Chinese society. There are many records in historical and biographical literature such as official history, notes and unofficial history, and they are more active in literary works such as novels, operas and poems.According to the characters’ moral character, words and deeds, the dandy characters in the Ming and Qing opera works can be divided into three types: stupid and incompetent, sneaky and hurtful, and bullying. As a type of character image, the dandy character has the common characteristics of rich and noble origin,no serious work, bad conduct and so on.There are three kinds of arrangements for the fate of a dandy character: being unable to escape the law, being punished by external forces, and being aware of a lost path. There are some similarities and differences between dramas and novels in shaping the images of dandy characters: first, the novel creates a kind of progressive rebellious dandy, which the dramatists of the Ming and Qing Dynasties failed to give consideration to;Second, the detailed description of characters is slightly different. In order to meet the needs of performance, some operas have expanded some short passages in the novel;Thirdly, opera mainly portrays characters through "singing, reading, doing and fighting",while the methods of creating characters in novels are more diversified. The formation of the group of dandy characters in the operas of the Ming and Qing Dynasties is not only influenced by Chinese traditional ethics and morality, but also a concentrated reflection of the needs of the audience. At the same time,it has an inseparable relationship with the social reality. It is not only the epitome of social ills, but also the dramatist’s literary expression of his own experience. The group of dandy characters in Ming and Qing operas has important literary value and social significance: First,it enriches the types of characters in operas;Secondly,it has the function of setting off the positive characters in the play;Third, promoting the teaching of opera works in drama is conducive to maintaining social stability and the cultivation of the concept of right and wrong of the common people. |
