Ancient Chinese poetry has a long history and the profound cultural connotation. As an outstanding representative of traditional Chinese culture,Zati poetry reflects social life with highly condensed language art.It is of great significance to study and translate Zati poetry in the external communication of Chinese culture. The book An Introduction to Ancient Chinese Zati Poetry is a literary criticism work and it generalizes the cultural essence of ancient Chinese Zati poetry. The book not only introduces the concept, characteristics and development history of Zati poetry, but also gives interpretations and comments on the ancient Chinese Zati poetry. The translation of this book can actively disseminate the Zati poetry, carry forward the national culture, promote cultural exchange and development, and export cultural soft power. This translation practice report is based on the author’s translation of the ninth chapter(excerpt)of An Introduction to Ancient Chinese Zati Poetry.Guided by Newmark’s semantic translation theory, the translator describes and analyzes the task and process of individual translation practice from the aspects of vocabulary and syntax. This paper focuses on the problems encountered in the translation of this literary criticism work and the corresponding strategies adopted. The report is divided into five parts. The first part introduces the background and significance of the translation practice;the second part is the task description, which consists of the text analysis and studies on literary criticism;the third part describes the translation process, including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation;the fourth part selects typical cases from the translated material for study and explores the application of semantic translation theory in translation practice;and the last part summarizes the major findings and lists limitations and suggestions.
