With globalization being in full swing, the international community is paying more and more attention to China. To deepen global understanding of China, the spread of Chinese culture worldwide is necessary. As one of the earliest literary forms in China and the mainstay of Chinese culture, poetry plays an important role in the spread of Chinese culture.Among all kinds of poetry, the most unusual is Zati Poetry. Therefore, the study of Zati Poetry can not only attract people’s attention, but also promote the spread of Chinese culture internationally. This report is on the basis of the translation of chapter four of An Introduction to Ancient Chinese Zati Poetry,Zati Poetry’s Cultural Value and Their Contemporary Significance of Composition.Nida’s Functional Theory of Translation has been applied to the translation practice and research. This report, under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Theory, mainly focuses on solving problems related to translation of the source text about cultural elements and Zati poems. While translating, both the original text and its inner cultural meaning should be the main concentration in order to achieve functional equivalence between two languages and let the targets readers have a deeper understanding of the source text.To be specific, this report, under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Theory, analyzed some cases from levels of lexis, syntax and text.At lexical level, there are some difficulties related to translation of cultural words and quadrisyllabic word and idioms of the Zati poetry. To overcome the first difficulty, the translator adopted transliteration plus annotation which not only helps target readers understand the source text but also deliver its inner cultural meaning. As for the second difficulty, contents should be prioritized over form.At syntactic level, the concentration is mainly on some cases about conversion of voice, translation of non-subject sentences and restructuring. When translating, the translator paid attention of the syntactic structure of the source text to let it be equivalent to the translation as possible as he could. At textual level, some conjunctions are added to ensure the coherence and cohesion of the translation. The translator hopes this report offers some suggestions in the translation and research on Zati poetry.
