As the old and new dynamics of global economic development are changing,cultural trade is gradually becoming an emerging driving force for the economic growth and international influence of countries,and it is also of great significance for China to transform its economic and trade development mode and prosper cultural undertakings and cultural industries in the new era.Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Japan in 1972,bilateral relations have developed rapidly while the scale of trade has also expanded rapidly,and the profound cultural origin and economic strength have laid a solid foundation for the trade of cultural products between the two countries.As of 2022,China has been Japan’s top goods trading partner for twelve consecutive years,and Japan has been China’s second largest goods trading partner for four consecutive years.Japan is also one of the main export destinations of China’s cultural products,and has always ranked among the top six countries(regions)of China’s cultural products trade partners since2008.However,in recent years,the growth rate of China-Japan cultural products trade has slowed down,and the proportion of China’s total cultural trade and total trade with Japan is even declining.2022 is the 50 th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan,and the continuous innovation of multimodal transportation between China and Japan and the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement(RCEP)have both contributed to the deepening of trade between the two countries.The signing of the RCEP provides opportunities to deepen economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries,improve the environment for trade in cultural products,reduce the cost of trade in cultural products,and promote the further release of the potential of trade in cultural products between the two countries.Therefore,against the background of the slow development of cultural trade between China and Japan and the continuous improvement of trade conditions and trade environment,it is necessary to study the potential of cultural product trade between the two countries and analyze its influencing factors,which will help to further release the potential of cultural product trade between Japan and China and promote the sustainable development of cultural product trade between the two countries.This paper firstly analyzes the current situation of cultural product trade between China and Japan from two perspectives of trade scale and trade structure by using statistical description method,on the basis of which the index of comparative advantage,index of export similarity,index of intra-industry trade and index of trade complementarity are selected to analyze the competitiveness and complementarity of cultural product trade between the two countries.Finally,by constructing a stochastic frontier gravity model,we analyze the main factors affecting the trade of cultural products between China and Japan and measure the potential and efficiency of the trade of cultural products between the two countries.It is found that(1)the growth rate of China-Japan cultural products trade slows down,the proportion of bilateral trade volume is not high compared with the proportion of China’s total cultural products exports,and the structure of cultural products trade between the two countries is unevenly distributed;(2)the overall competitiveness of China’s cultural products exports to Japan is weakened,the overall complementarity of trade is stronger than the competitiveness,and the cultural products with relative competitive advantages of the two countries have the tendency to shift;(3)the relationship between China and trade partner countries’ GDP,China’s population size,geographic distance and whether they share a common language are important factors affecting China’s cultural products import and export trade and cultural products trade with Japan;(4)China’s cultural products trade potential with Japan is overall high,and the trade potential of import and export trade is higher than that of export trade,and the value of trade potential has shown an upward trend in recent years after a longer period of decline,for This is also true for sub-categories of cultural products,which still have a large trade potential to be exploited.Based on the above conclusions,this paper puts forward policy suggestions for reference from the following three perspectives: first,optimize the trade structure of cultural products and promote supply-side reform;second,improve the efficiency of cultural product trade and reduce export costs;third,improve the cultural information exchange platform and strengthen cultural exchanges.
