A Report On C-E Translation Practice Of Chinese Shadow Play (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Cultural Translation Theory

By introducing shadow play,understand its artistic charm and the characteristics of traditional culture.The source text is a kind of folklore text with regional and inherited characteristics.Considering the characteristics,translation must faithfully convey the message of the source text and culture.Cultural translation theory regards translation as an act of communication between different cultures.In order to achieve cultural functional equivalence,translators need to exercise their initiative and use various translation strategies to deal with cultural problems.Take cultural translation theory as key point,this translation practice explores related cases to find translation strategies.From the perspective of cultural translation,the paper points at three levels: word,sentence and discourse.At the lexical level,select classical books with a long history,rich appellations,and loaded words containing traditional Chinese cultural characteristics,and use translation methods such as transliteration,annotation,free translation,and rewriting to convey the source text information and present the cultural imagery behind the information,achieving the goal of cultural exchange.At the sentence level,classical Chinese,flexible loose sentences and complex long sentences are chosen as representatives.Translation methods such as paraphrasing,omission,and word order adjustment are used to make logic clear,in line with the reading habits of the target language readers,and to eliminate reading barriers for readers.At the discourse level,by compensating for culture and thematic progression,case studies are analyzed to ensure natural coherence and fluency in the translation.With the help of different translation techniques and methods,translation practice presents uniqueness of the shadow play,achieves cultural functional equivalence in a certain sense,and spreads excellent traditional culture.It is expected that the translation practice will provide reference value for cultural translation study.
