With the deepening of curriculum reform and the introduction of key competencies,it has become a basic consensus among researchers and practitioners to take theme as the guidance and the unit as a whole for teaching design,fully exploit the education value of the discipline and grasp the key competencies of the discipline as a whole.English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)(hereinafter referred to as Standards)clearly states that selecting and organizing course contents with theme,strengthening the integrality of unit teaching.However,most teachers are still confined to the small pattern of language knowledge and skills development,and there are problems of fragmented teaching content,shallow student learning,and fragmented literacy development.Therefore,this study aims to study the effects of the overall unit instruction in junior high school English under the guidance of thematic meaning,taking Go For It for example.This study aims to study the effects of the overall unit instruction in junior high school English under the guidance of thematic meaning under the guidance of thematic meaning based on systemic theory,constructivism theory and whole language teaching theory.A survey of 36 English teachers in the internship school is conducted with the help of a questionnaire to find out the extent of English teachers’ understanding and implementation.SPSS software is used to analyze the midterm and final scores of 102 students in the experimental and control classes.Classroom observation and interview are used to record the behavior of the students in two classes.Three questions are answered as follows:(1)How should the overall unit instructional design under the guidance of thematic meaning be conducted?(2)What effects of the overall unit instruction under the guidance of thematic meaning on students’ English achievements?(3)What effects of the overall unit instruction under the guidance of thematic meaning on students’ English learning attitude?The main findings are as follows:(1)Most teachers do not have a good understanding of the main steps of the overall unit instructional design under the guidance of thematic meaning,and they do not implement the teaching model in their daily teaching.The five steps of the design are refining unit thematic meaning,integrating unit teaching contents,formulating unit objectives,designing unit learning activities,and making unit evaluation gauge.(2)The overall unit instruction is implemented in the experimental class on the premise that there is no significant difference between the pre-test results of the control and experimental classes.As a result,the post-test scores of the students in both classes all increase,but the English scores of the experimental class improve more and there is a significant difference between the pre-test results and the post-test results.(3)Students’ interest in learning English has improved,both in terms of classroom activities,use of the target language,evaluation,and completion of assignments in class.Students’ attitude toward learning English have become more positive.Therefore,teachers should enhance their familiarity and attention to the overall unit instruction under the guidance of thematic meaning,and establish a correct view of the teaching materials,implement and improve the overall unit instruction,so as to to improve students’ English achievements,change students’ English learning attitude and provide a guarantee for students’ key competencies in English.
