Jazz music saw a rapid development in the 20th century, and gradually became integrated into mainstream American music culture.During this period,Robert Muczynski,a Polish-American composer, focused on American indigenous music and expertly incorporated jazz music elements into his piano works.By boldly combining tradition and pop,he did not compromise the musicality of his expression, giving his works a distinct and personal style. This article is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of Robert Muczynski’s life, major works, and musical style;the second part analyzes the jazz elements and performance techniques in Muczynski’s early piano solo work,Six Prelude,Op.6;the third part examines the jazz elements and performance techniques in Muczynski’s late piano solo work,Desperate Measures(Paganini Variations),Op.48.Muczynski’s piano solo works span over 40 years of his life;this article explores the jazz elements in two of his piano solo works from his early and late periods. The aim is to fill a gap in this field and provide learners and performers who want to study Muczynski’s works with a more comprehensive understanding and approach to performance.
