A Preliminary Study On Chinese Catholic Social Thought During The Republic Of China Perio

By combining the social and political environment of the Republic of China and the history of the modernization of Catholicism(China),this article makes a detailed study of the development history and text content of the Panshi Magazine(1932-1937),which was founded in the branch of the Youth Association of the Chinese Catholic Action of Fu Jen University in Peking and later became the bulletin of the Youth Department of the Chinese Catholic Action(Youth Department of the Chinese Catholic Action Progressive Association)sponsored by the National Steering Committee of the Youth Association of the Chinese Catholic Action.Through the induction and examination of the core content of the Panshi Magazine,it can be seen that it contains some of the achievements of the Chinese Catholic Church in terms of theological thinking and ethical values at that time,which is fundamentally the basic teaching and principles aimed at guiding the social understanding and behavior of the members of the public church-"Faith guides life and behavior,divine karma and secular life are equally important,and concern for others and society",This was also the basic logic behind the construction of Chinese Catholic social ideology at that time.This achievement of sinicization is based on the ideological tradition of the public religion itself and the social history situation.The "Chinese consciousness" born on the basis of the latter contains the feelings of family and country and the care for the near people(Chinese people).From the perspective of the universality of the Catholic Church,the focus of Panshi Magazine on the social reality of China at that time lies in the development of the Catholic social ideological system and the process of modern Catholic transformation since modern times;From the perspective of the development process of Chinese Catholicism,the social observation and thoughts in the magazine also indicate the actual path of localization and localization of Catholicism at that time,that is,"adhering to the principles of faith,knowing self citizen consciousness;participating in Chinese society,and solving Chinese problems".Through a specific examination of the text content of the Panshi Magazine,it can be found that in the 1930s,the Chinese Catholic Church actively participated in social change and carried out social work,and constructed the specific content of the social ideology of the Chinese Catholic Church during this period through extensive discussions.On the basis of the tradition of the Catholic and the Chinese sentiment,Panshi Magazine deliberately showcases and emphasizes relevant content such as literature,history,philosophy,wisdom,personality cultivation,literature and sports,and proclaims the "elegant" design of the Chinese Catholic Church for the national humanistic spirit;By discussing the "legitimate"relationship between science and religion,as well as introducing the knowledge and achievements of natural sciences,the church candidly acknowledges the judgment of scientific boundaries and the significance of modern science in the construction and transformation of the material world;Through discussions and suggestions on the relief,assistance,and education of vulnerable groups in society without compromising the foundation of the public and the church,the church has developed its modern concern for "social improvement" and its interpretation of true "humanitarianism";Through practical discussions on the political and economic issues in China in the 1930s,the Chinese Catholic Church adhered to its conservative attitude towards political reform,and emphasized the affirmation of the Christian faith for active patriotic practice in the tide of the times.At the same time,on the basis of maintaining private ownership,specific economic and social de velopment suggestions were also proposed.
