| Happiness occupies an important position in ancient Greek ethics and is an important category discussed by many ancient Greek philosophers. On the one hand,Aristotle put forward a different view of happiness than the ancient Greeks, that is,he was not in favor of either total pleasure or complete abstinence, and he advocated happiness through the realization of activities on a moderate basis. On the other hand, despite the many connections between pleasure and happiness,Aristotle did not directly equate the two.Happiness is included in happiness and is an important part of happiness,so the investigation of happiness is essential. As an "encyclopedic" figure in ancient Greece,Aristotle’s concept of happiness not only had great significance to the ancient Greek society at that time, but also had a positive influence on people’s correct concept of happiness today. The happiness mentioned by Aristotle was proposed based on the social reality of ancient Greece. The unique geographical environment and economic conditions of ancient Greece,as well as the political and cultural environment of the city-states closely related to this, all had great influence on Aristotle. The formation of the concept of morality and happiness has an important influence. The concept of happiness has been formed in the pre-philosophical era.Based on the critical inheritance of many opinions of predecessors and the concept of happiness of Socrates and Plato,Aristotle finally formed his own concept of happiness.Aristotle’s definition of "happiness" in "Nicomachean Ethics" mainly involves two places. In Book VII,happiness is regarded as the unimpeded realization of normal qualities, and in Book X Pleasure ceases to be an actualizing activity, and becomes a "perfect" actualizing existence. These two definitions are not completely separated, they are related in content, and both revolve around the implementation activities.Happiness is closely related to a certain state inside the soul.Happiness is not an emotion or quality, but a kind of ability.Pleasure is "examined" because it is closely related to both the highest good and ethical virtues. The ways or conditions for producing happiness are mainly divided into three categories, namely, producing happiness from desires and feelings, producing happiness from habits, and obtaining happiness from intercourse with others. For the classification of happiness, based on the "three kinds of life" proposed by Aristotle, happiness can be divided into biological happiness, social happiness and contemplative happiness.Pleasure is closely related to both virtue and happiness. On the one hand, happiness is closely related to virtue and evil in virtue qualities.Pleasure is so important for moral conduct that it is often used as a means of educating the young. In addition, the relationship between happiness and specific ethical virtues(self-control,temperance)is: in the face of happiness, being able to reasonably control desires is self-control,and maintaining moderation in the face of happiness is temperance. On the other hand, despite the many connections between pleasure and happiness,Aristotle did not directly equate the two.Happiness and happiness are both interrelated and different.Happiness is included in happiness, and the concept of happiness is an important part of the concept of happiness.Today we study Aristotle’s concept of happiness and want to carry on its critical inheritance.First of all,we must see the limitations of Aristotle’s concept of happiness, such as not getting rid of the theological framework, and the logical argument is not rigorous.Secondly,we should also recognize the enlightening significance of Aristotle’s concept of happiness to the construction of contemporary people’s concept of happiness and life. Therefore,on the basis of fully understanding the limitations of Aristotle’s concept of happiness,we should reasonably view and grasp its value,so as to help people better improve themselves and participate in life. |
