Since the beginning of the new century,the world pattern has quietly changed,and under the pattern of "one superpower,many powers",many developing countries have begun to rise,and China is no exception.With the rapid development of China’s economy,science and technology and culture,the cooperation and exchanges between developed countries led by the United States and China in various fields have become closer and more frequent.As the fastest growing developing country,after entering the new century,China has also attracted unprecedented attention from Western countries.As the most developed country in the world,the United States,with its strong communication advantages,has played a huge role in presenting China to the world and spreading China.Since the beginning of the new century,the United States has filmed a series of different types of documentaries about China,which has important references and references for other countries to understand China and China’s self-shaping national image.Therefore,studying American documentaries related to China will help us better understand China in the eyes of Western countries,so as to better construct Chinese discourse and Chinese narrative system,and then comprehensively improve China’s international communication capacity building and communication efficiency,It can have more say in the international community.This paper selects American China-related documentaries after 2000 as research samples,based on framework theory,combined with data analysis of the overall characteristics of American China-related documentaries,analyzes the topic setting,narrative structure and audiovisual expression of American China-related documentaries from the macro,meso and micro levels,and then analyzes the shaping of China’s national image in American China-related documentaries in the new century from the overall image and main posture,and summarizes the Chinese national image of American Chinarelated documentaries at different stages in the new century.It can be found out through research,at different times,American documentaries on China presented different images of China,with more and less output and positive and negative differences in attitudes.This paper intends to analyze the image of China in American documentaries related to China from the influence of cultural and practical factors,so as to better grasp the attitude of the United States towards China and the viewing desire and aesthetic taste of American audiences,and by drawing these conclusions,we can provide enlightenment for our country to spread the national image to the outside world,so as to shape a more just,comprehensive and objective China internationally.This article is divided into four chapters.The introduction part mainly describes the background and significance of the research,sorts out the research status of China’s national image and the US China-related documentary since the new century at home and abroad,determines the research object and research content of this paper,clarifies the research methods and theories,summarizes the research innovation and shortcomings,and explains the source of research samples.The first chapter summarizes the production,development and overall characteristics of American documentaries related to China.Chapter 2 starts from the framework theory and uses the analysis of sample data to study China-related documentaries in the United States,including macro-level topic setting,meso-level narrative structure,and micro-level audiovisual expression.Chapter3 summarizes and analyzes the shaping of China’s national image in US documentaries related to China since the new century;Chapter 4 analyzes the reasons for China’s national image presented by American China-related documentaries from the aspects of cultural backgrounds and practical factors of the two countries,as well as the enlightenment of American China-related documentaries to China’s external communication,so as to provide inspiration and suggestions for China’s future better construction of national image and strengthening international communication capabilities.
