In recent years, the Party Central Committee, with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, has led the nation to great achievements, with China’s economy continuing to grow steadily, its per capita income increasing significantly and its international competitiveness growing significantly. In the next stage, how to make the world aware of a more realistic China has become an important issue and an urgent task for Chinese diplomacy. As objective images, documentaries can help us to understand and think about the world, but before they are presented to the audience, they go through multiple processes of selection, photography and editing, and the final images shown are not the exact reproduction of objective facts, but artistic creations influenced by the inner concepts of the filmmakers. In this paper,NHK’s China-related documentaries are chosen to study the image of the country, because on the one hand,NHK has a reputation as a benchmark in the industry,as it is a world-class production base, and on the other hand,NHK has produced a large number of documentaries about China, with a sufficient sample size to re-examine the "other" as a cultural form of each other, which is of great importance to China. On the other hand,NHK has produced a large number of documentaries on China, which are able to re-examine the "other" as a cultural form of each other, and have important implications for China. After a preliminary analysis,I found that most of the current studies on China’s national image in NHK’s China-related documentaries are focused on individual studies of a particular documentary. The author selects China-related documentaries collected from 2000 to 2020 and analyses the narrative themes, narrative expressions, narrative language and narrative rhetoric of NHK’s China-related documentaries from a narratological perspective. The documentaries are then presented in a narrative manner, from which it is found that NHK’s China-related documentaries present a dichotomous image of China: a humanistic and historical image of splendour and disappearance;a social and livelihood image of peace and conflict;a natural environment image of beauty and crisis;and a political and economic image of rise and oppression. This shows that the images of China presented in NHK’s China-related documentaries are contradictory and contradictory, reflecting Japan’s complex attitudes and feelings towards China. On the basis of the image of China constructed in the NHK China-related documentary, the author digs deeper into the influencing factors behind the formation of the above image: combining political, economic and cultural background reasons,I conclude that the image of China constructed in the NHK China-related documentary is the result of a combination of factors such as cultural and psychological contexts,Sino-Japanese political relations and the overall strength of the country. Finally, the author summarises the advantages and merits of the "other-shape" image, and proposes an optimisation path for the "self-shape" on this basis. The study of the narrative techniques used in NHK’s China-related documentaries to construct the image of China will help us learn from the excellent narrative experiences of other countries,so that we can create documentaries on China with a more international perspective,so as to grasp the initiative of image construction and create a more outstanding image of a great nation.
