English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High Schools(2017 Edition 2020Reversion)proposed that learning ability is a component of the core competencies and formed the development condition of the core competencies of the English discipline.It is extremely important to cultivate students’ learning ability in English teaching.Projectbased learning is driven by problems and guided by curriculum standards.In the process of completing the project,students mobilize all learning resources to achieve a deep understanding of knowledge and improve ability through cooperative inquiry.It is a student-centered learning model which can drive students to actively participate in learning and truly understand “what,why,and how to learn”.It also improves students’ learning ability,which is one of the purposes of English teaching.Combined with existing research,there are few studies on the application of PBL model to cultivate students’ English learning ability,especially in combination with the new version English(new standard)textbooks published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press in 2019.Thus,the author applies PBL model to senior high school English teaching,aiming to cultivate students’ English learning ability.The author selects 86 students from two parallel classes in the second grade of a high school in Longquanyi District of Chengdu as the research participants and tries to use the PBL model in the experimental class,while the control class still maintained the conventional English teaching.This study aims to explore the following three questions:(1)What dimensions can the application of PBL in senior high school English teaching cultivate students’ English learning ability?(2)To what extent have students’ abilities in these dimensions been improved?(3)What strategies can teachers use to better apply PBL in senior high school English teaching to cultivate students’ English learning ability?The study mainly uses three instruments to collect data: questionnaire,classroom observation and students’ self-report.Before the experiment,the pre-questionnaire is carried out among all the research participants to investigate the current level of their English learning ability.During the experiment,combined with the textbook and the current teaching condition,the teaching design and implementation of the unit project and classroom observation are carried out.After the experiment,the post-questionnaire is implemented for all students in the experimental group and their self-reports are collected.Meanwhile,the control group is given the pre-questionnaire as a control.The questionnaire data are statistically analyzed by using SPSS 26.0.The results show that:(1)Before the experiment,students’ English learning ability is generally at the medium level and there is no significant difference;after the experiment,there is no significant change of students’ learning ability in the control group and the overall and all dimensions of students’ English learning ability have been improved to a certain extent in the experimental group.In terms of specific dimensions,students’ ability in dimension of cooperate and explore has been improved the most,followed by initiative and enterprise,select and obtain,monitor and adjust.(2)As for project implementation,firstly,from the project design and implementation,teachers can improve from four aspects: learning content,objectives,methods and results;then,from the aspect of teachers’ roles,teachers should change their roles,strengthen the assistance and guidance to students,so as to better cultivate students’ learning ability;finally,in teaching,teachers should ensure fairness,give every student the same learning opportunity,and pay attention to the cultivation of every student’s learning ability.All in all,based on the new version textbooks,this study combines PBL model with senior high school English teaching,and verifies that it has positive effects on cultivating senior high school students’ English learning ability through experiment.However,due to the limitations of the sample size and time duration,this study has certain limitations.In the future research,the author will continue to make improvements from these aspects.
