The story of the Sui and Tang dynasties is one of the well-known stories in ancient China.Shan Xiongxin, who appeared in the stories of the Sui and Tang dynasties more often, was closely related to other heroes of the Sui and Tang dynasties, and was an important figure. The Tang and Song biographical notes often record that Shan Xiongxin is the brave general of Wagang, with a positive image. However,《Zizhi Tongjian》 is more special. It describes Shan Xiongxin as a fickle person, with many negative descriptions. In the Ming and Qing dynasties,Shan Xiongxin’s stories were more abundant. His literary images in the novels of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Sui and Tang dynasties, were either shameless villains seeking glory for their masters,or the heroes of the green forest who were loyal to the sky.In the ancient operas of the Sui and Tang Dynasties,Shan Xiongxin experienced a huge transformation from the supporting role in the Yuan Opera and the legends of the Ming and Qing Dynasties to the leading role in local operas. The evolution of Shan Xiongxin’s image reflects the influence of many factors, such as the trend of thought of the times, the author’s creation, and the interaction of the text, and also has the significance of revealing the cultural connotation of the story. There is little research on Shan Xiongxin in the academic circle, especially in opera, and the discussion of various factors affecting the image evolution is not comprehensive and in-depth.Based on ancient novels and operas, this paper makes a comprehensive study of the evolution of Shan Xiongxin’s image and explores the reasons for its formation. This paper mainly includes four chapters. The first chapter combs Shan Xiongxin’s records in Tang and Song biographical notes, analyzes his positive and negative images, and analyzes the reasons behind them. The second chapter discusses the changes of Shan Xiongxin’s image in the novels of the Sui and Tang dynasties in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and analyzes the deep reasons that affect the development of the stories of the Sui and Tang dynasties and the evolution of Shan Xiongxin’s image. The third chapter discusses the change of Shan Xiongxin’s position in ancient Sui and Tang operas, that is,from the supporting role in Yuan drama and Ming and Qing legends to the leading role in classical local operas.Deeply explore the reasons why the audience’s aesthetic taste, the interaction between the text of opera and novel, and the characteristics of the text of opera affect Shan Xiongxin’s position in the Sui and Tang operas. The fourth chapter, based on the three theme stories of Shan Xiongxin’s revenge description, identity change and the end of being beheaded, analyzes their writing differences in different times and different texts, explores the deep cultural connotation contained in the stories, and shows the relationship between literature and culture.
