Study On Xu Han’s Philology

Xu Han(1797-1866)was a famous scholar,philologist,phonologist,epigrapher,surveyor,catalogue versionist and calligrapher during the Daoguang and Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynastyand.He was a student of Wang Niansun and Wang Yinzhi,and he intersected with famous scholars such as Wang Xisin,Wang Yun,Zhang Mu,etc.He had the title of "the first scholar in the north",which has an important position in the academic history of Shandong.Xu Han is proficient in philology and phonology and is committed to the study of"Shuowen"(说文),not only researching and expounding the theory of Shuo Wen Jie Zi,but also using the theory as a guide,proofreading and publishing Gui Fu’s Shuo Wen Jie Zi Yi Zheng.At the same time,Xu Han is also committed to epigraphy.Xu Han’s research on the study of the"Shuowen"(说文)and the epigraphy complement each other.This article adopts the documentary method and the analytical induction to study Xu Han’s philology theory,including the study of"Shuowen"(说文)and the study of Jinshi(金石)characters.This article is divided into five parts to discuss Xu Han’s philology theory:The first part is an examination of Xu Han’s life,this paper sorts out Xu Han’s family history from the perspectives of ancestors and six generations of family,and divides Xu Han’s life into four periods:studying diligently,applying for official examinations,proofreading books in the South and North,and teaching in academies.The second part is Xu Han’s philological works,mostly are classics examination,bronze interpretation and book postscript miscellaneous,and there are also works with room name "Pan Gu Xiao Lu"(攀古小庐).Therefore,this article concludes that Xu Han’s philology works include ancient characters,ancient stone carvings and "Pan Gu Xiao Lu"(攀古小庐).The third part is Xu Han’s research on "Shuowen"(说文),which mainly studies Xu Han’s research on Shuo Wen Jie Zi and Xu Han’s collation and research on Gui Fu’s Shuo Wen Jie Zi Yi Zheng,analyzes Xu Han’s research on the theory and heavy text of Shuo Wen Jie Zi and quotes the Book of Songs in Shuo Wen Jie Zi,and summarizes Xu Han’s achievements in proofreading and publishing the use of the base,proofreading and printing of Gui Fu’s Shuo Wen Jie Zi Yi Zheng.The fourth part is Xu Han’s study of epigraphy,mainly combing Xu Han’s collection,interpretation and application of epigraphy literature,analyzing Xu Han’s specific practice of interpreting the "Xiong"(兄)character and studying Pingyi Shique(平邑石阙),and further summarizing Xu Han’s Jinshi(金石)examination method.The third and fourth parts are the focus of this paper.
