Television Simultaneous Interpretation Strategies For Football Match Commentar

El Clásico,the football matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid,has been developing within the span of nearly 100 years.The high level of competence of the two teams and dedicated tactical arrangement by the two coaches has attracted many football fans in the world.This report,based upon the author’s simulated experience of interpreting for three El Clásicos in 2022,aims to explore the features of and strategies for television simultaneous interpreting.As one of the many types of colloquial-style speech,the language of football match comments features football jargon,short sentence with leaps in logic and "loose" associations,fast speech rate,and vivid images and utterances,which no doubt increase the interpreter’s efforts to understand the source language.Distinct from interpreters working for other scenarios,when interpreting for live television programs like football matches,the interpreter also needs to take over the work of the event commentator’s,constructing meaning from multiple information sources.Besides linguistic information,extra-linguistic and non-linguistic information of the source language should also be taken good care of.Given the characteristics of the speech style of football match comments and the distinctiveness of television simultaneous interpreting for such events,this report highlights the role of anticipation and inference in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting and finds that under the guidance of schema theory and relevance theory,interpreters are more able to anticipate speakers’ intentions through building linguistic schemata,content schemata,and structural schemata and are more qualified in inferring the speaker’s implicit sense by achieving optimal relevance via the key words and the extra-linguistic and non-linguistic representations in the source language.This report conveys the hope that most of simultaneous interpreters,especially those engaged in football-related interpretings,could be provided with some insight for their future interpreting practice.
