The Buddhism of the Southern Dynasty, which flourished in the Liang Dynasty, suffered a devastating blow during the war at the end of the Liang Dynasty. After Chen Baxian established the Chen regime,he carried out a series of restoration and reconstruction work on Buddhism.Buddhism was able to regroup in the Chen Dynasty and glow with new vitality.Buddhism in the Chen Dynasty developed rapidly and had great characteristics, had a profound impact on Buddhism in the Sui and Tang dynasties, had an important position in the history of Buddhism. This article attempts to explore three aspects of Buddhism in the Chen Dynasty, comb the development context of Buddhism in the Chen Dynasty, and analyze the development characteristics of Buddhism in the Chen Dynasty. The first chapter mainly studies the royal Buddhism of the Chen Dynasty.Chen Wudi vigorously developed the cause of Buddhism, frequent use of Buddhism in political activities, advocate Buddhism after the establishment of the state, laid down the policy of worshipping Buddhism in the Chen Dynasty, shaped the background of the royal family of the Chen Dynasty to be close to Buddhism.Since then, emperors of all dynasties in the Chen Dynasty have been in love with Buddhist culture, engaged in Buddhist activities personally, adopt certain Buddhist policies to develop and control Buddhism.Led by the emperor, the royal princes of the Chen Dynasty also devoted themselves to Buddhist activities and befriended the monks. The positive attitude of the emperors of the Chen Dynasty towards Buddhism directly led to the prosperity of Buddhism in the Chen Dynasty.Scholar Buddhism is a representative part of Chen Dynasty Buddhism, which is of great research value. The second chapter mainly focuses on the Chen Dynasty scholar Buddhism represented by Jiang Zong and Xu Ling.Buddhist belief is more common among scholars in the Chen Dynasty,Most of the Buddhist scholars are in high positions and hold the leading power of culture, which is an important driving force for the development and dissemination of Buddhism in the Chen Dynasty. The metaphysics revival in the Chen Dynasty,Buddhist scholars often like Buddhist theory and idle talk, make friends with monks, integrate Buddhist thoughts into poetry and banquets, greatly affected the cultural atmosphere of the Chen Dynasty.Under the political situation of weak in the south and strong in the north, most of them place their feelings on the other side and the afterlife that Buddhism pursues, actively engage in Buddhist activities and escape the pressure and conflict of the world through religious belief. The scholar Buddhism of the Chen Dynasty is the epitome of the scholar Buddhism of the whole Southern Dynasty. From the Buddhist deeds of the scholar of the Chen Dynasty,we can summarize some common characteristics. The third chapter discusses the development and transformation of the academic and organizational models of the three major Buddhist schools in the Chen Dynasty.Under the official advocacy, the mainstream school of Buddhism in the Chen Dynasty was the Three Treatise School in the early stage and the Tiantai Sect in the later stage.Falang, the representative of the Three Treatise School, emerged at the time of the change of dynasties, frustrated various schools one after another in the Buddhist debate, highly recommnded by Emperor Chen Wudi. The "Four Apprentices of Hermeneutics" led their disciples to take root in the capital, and the "Three Theories" became popular at the beginning of Chen Dynasty.Huisi, the leader of the Tiantai sect in Northern Turkey during the reign of Emperor Chen Xuandi, went south because of political persecution. His disciple Zhiyi came to the capital and was rewarded by the emperors and officials, which triggered the change of the Buddhist style in the middle and late period of Chen. The Zhiguan thought and Zen of Tiantai greatly enriched the content of Buddhism in the Southern Dynasty,Zhiyi’s thought of Dharma transmission from the city to the mountains is a major innovation in the dissemination of local Buddhism, the establishment of Tiantai Buddhism directly opened a new stage of sectarian Buddhism in the Sui and Tang dynasties. In addition to mainstream Buddhism, there were late Liang and early Chen Zhendi came to China to spread the Cittamatra.Although for various reasons,Zebdi’s path of teaching the Dharma has been bumpy, and his learning has not received the attention of the people at that time. However,Zebdi’s large number of translated classics and lectures have made great contributions to the development and improvement of local Cittamatra, also laid the foundation for the confluence of Shelun School and Dilun School, and the rise of the dharma character school in the Sui and Tang dynasties.
