On Domestication And Foreignization Of The Chinese Version Of A Song Of Ice And Fire

From the middle of the 20th century,Western fantasy novels set off a boom,and the pursuit of irrationality and romance of today’s people was released in literature.The rapid development of science and technology has extended the life of literary works to the field of film and television.While increasing the influence of the original works,it has also demonstrated the potential influence of culture and its role in promoting the economy.People from different countries and nationalities get to know each other in cultural exchanges,free their minds and embrace their spiritual wonderland in literature,and translation plays an indispensable role in this process.Since Schleiermacher proposed the two methods of translation and Venuti established the terms of domestication and foreignization,the study of domestication and foreignization in translation has flourished and their research has covered from linguistic to cultural and ethical level,and these two terms have changed their binary opposition today.This thesis selects A Song of Ice and Fire:A Game of Thrones by George R.R.Martin,a famous contemporary American fantasy master,and its Chinese simplified version,published by Chongqing Publishing House and translated by Qu Chang and Tan Guanglei,as analysis texts.From the perspective of domestication and foreignization,through the methods of literature reading and text analysis,the translation in the Chinese version of the book is explored,and its writing characteristics,fictional things,self-coined words,etc.are analyzed.In the Chinese version of A Song of Ice and Fire:Game of Thrones,the translators adopt the domestication strategy mainly through the method of free translation,and also use some translation techniques,such as amplification,omission,shift,and annotation.etc.,in order to enhance the readability and literariness of the text and facilitate the reader’s understanding.The foreignization strategy is realized by literal translation,transliteration and free translation to retain the exoticism and some western cultural features.
