"A Song of Ice and Fire" is a representative work of the American writer George R.R.Martin.This epic fantasy masterpiece has a worldwide reputation and won many literary awards.In the overall narrative of the work,death narration accounts for a large proportion and plays a decisive role in shaping characters,advancing the plot,setting the tone of the work,and expressing the author’s creative style.Through the attention and description of death,the author inherited the tradition of exploring the meaning of life and existence in Western literature.On the other hand,also shows his personal development of the death narrative in fantasy literature.This article is composed by three parts.The introduction introduces George R.R.Martin’s creative situation and research status at domestic and foreign,as well as the significance of the topic.The body part is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly discusses the goals of death narratives,from the impact of death events on characters and the shaping of images,the role of death narratives in laying out the lines of the entire works,and the mix and match style presented through death narratives.The second chapter analyzes the way of death narrative in "A Song of Ice and Fire",and digs out three aspects:directly describing the scene of death,the setting of death image,and creating the death atmosphere.The third chapter discusses the reading effects which are brought about by the death narrative,and analyzes how the author stimulates readers’ deep reading,which makes the reader feel the situation irony and forms a multi-cognition.The final conclusion is a summary of the entire paper.
