WenXuan is the most important literary anthology in the Pre-Tang Dynasty, which includes excellent poems and articles from pre-Qin to Qi and Liang dynasties.Later generations of literary scholars regarded it as a model of Pre-Tang literature.Li Shan annotated WenXuan in the Tang Dynasty, which took the lead in the prosperous development of WenXuan-learning.From the Song Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty, the status of WenXuan fluctuated, but it still attracted many famous scholars to explore its mysteries.During the Qing Dynasty, when the study of WenXuan was thriving, many famous scholars gathered and wrote extensively in various fields such as elementary studies, textual criticism, versions, editing, authenticity. The momentum was far greater than that of previous generations. In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, the study of WenXuan gradually declined. As the successor of the Qian-Jia school,Huang Kan’s Reviews on the WenXuan mainly focused on textual research and literary criticism. It used traditional commentary-point method.Huang’s academic methods originated from Qing scholars, but his study of WenXuan was inclusive and innovative, making it worth exploring for future scholars.Under the influence of his family and teachers’ culture,Huang Kan is proficient in Chinese literature and is good at elementary studies, which lays a solid foundation for his future governance of WenXuan. This paper combines Reviews on the WenXuan with elementary studies tradition and modern academic transformation, and expounds the process of making Reviews on the WenXuan into a book and later versions.Since modern times, the study of WenXuan has been declining and the sinology was weak.Huang Kan believed that traditional academic culture was the fundamental to safeguard the survival and development of the nation. He reviewed Wen Xuan ten times.Although the manuscript was not published during his lifetime,it has been published as Reviews on the WenXuan after several efforts of later generations.Huang Kan used the traditional commentary-point criticism school method, and his work is replete with material that is comprehensive and uses a wide range of circle-point symbols, which are rich in meaning.Huang’s WenXuan-learning inherited the characteristics of Ming and Qing dynasty WenXuan science commentary, and he developed it into a"testimony and commentary in one" mode, which formed a commentary-testimony combination mode that directly influenced his nephew Huang Zhuo’s study of WenXuan. In the modern academic context of the decline of WenXuan studies and the failure of commentary,Huang Kan’s study of WenXuan in the form of circle criticism also showed that the advantages of traditional scholarship methods.Huang Kan’s Reviews on the WenXuan textual research adheres to the characteristics of the Qing dynasty Qian-Jia scholars who were well-versed in elementary studies.Huang Kan used proofreading as a method to obtain extensive knowledge and search for information, resulting in factual and innovative textology. The book is rich in evidence, including note text correction, word exegesis, mutual evidence of literature and history.Huang’s textual research is rigorous and objective, perfecting the WenXuan note system and fully interpreting the Qian-Jia sages and the chapter of the Zhang-Huang school of scholarship.Although there are comments too brief, contradictory and cling to the old deficiencies, the flaws do not outweigh his merit.Huang Kan’s Reviews on the WenXuan literary criticism study can be examined from three aspects, namely,"discernment of style","grammatical view",and "commentary on stallions".In content,Huang’s research is based on tradition, which involves common literary styles, chapters and verses, and commentary on classical Chinese literature. In terms of method,Huang combines Wen Xin Diao Long with WenXuan subtly, thus making up for the deficiencies of Qing Dynasty WenXuan-learning.This is of great significance in the history of WenXuan-learning and the history of essayology. In the transition period of old and new academic,Huang Kan’s Reviews on the WenXuan has a value called "ShouZhengChuXin"."Shou Zheng" refers to the research path of inheriting the Qing Dynasty scholars’ emphasis on pure-learning,while "Chu Xin" refers to Huang Kan’s use of new materials and new perspectives to study WenXuan under the background of modern academic transformation, which includes the combination of the study of invention and the study of discovery, the interaction between literature and elementary studies, and the integration of Wen Xin Diao Long-learning and WenXuan-learning.Huang Kan studied Wen Xuan with great effort and kept improving. He inherited the commentary-point of WenXuan in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and opened up a new situation of the study of WenXuan in modern times. He also had some reference for the development of the study of WenXuan in the future and academic thinking at present. In short, under modern politics, culture, society and academia dramatic transformation,Huang Kan adhered to tradition and actively innovates, and worked hard on the WenXuan. Therefore,Reviews on the WenXuan had the exemplary significance of old learning and new knowledge,It was a cultural wealth worth inheriting and developing.
